COMMISSIONER OF POLICE — GREG ITALIANO
389. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
Before asking my question, on behalf of the member for
Willagee I acknowledge and welcome the students from Melville Primary School
who are in the gallery today.
I refer to the Corruption and Crime Commission website, which
provides guarantees that people will be protected when making a report to an
agency. It states —
There are heavy penalties for
victimising or harassing people who make reports to the Corruption and Crime
Commission.
(1) In
respect of Dr O'Callaghan's comments that he and Mr Greg
Italiano ''will not be able to work together in the future'',
does the Premier agree that should Dr O'Callaghan be reappointed as
Commissioner of Police, Mr Italiano no longer has a role with WA Police?
(2) Can the
Premier guarantee that Mr Italiano will not be subject to any form of
victimisation or harassment following his legal compulsion to provide a report
to the CCC; and, if he cannot provide any guarantee, does this now mean that
public servants who give a report or evidence to the CCC have no safeguards in
terms of job security or job tenure?

What a convoluted question that was.
Mr M. McGowan : It is an important
issue.
Mr C.J. BARNETT : Again, the Corruption
and Crime Commission report was released this week and I think, from some of
the comments made by the Commissioner of Police in the media, it is clear that
there is an unworkable relationship between the police commissioner and Mr
Italiano; I accept that. So, what happens next? If that is the case, the police
commissioner will bring it to the attention of the Minister for Police and to
the minister responsible for public sector management, and we will deal with
it. I assure members that there will be no victimisation of anyone who gave evidence
to the CCC and nor would there be, because again, as I say, this is a
government of integrity.
