Hon. Alison Xamon asks about patient numbers, Aboriginal patient numbers, admissions, and referrals from Broome Hospital's mental health inpatient unit, particularly to Graylands Hospital. I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1) 115 patients presented through Broome Hospital's
emergency department.
(2) 111 Aboriginal people.
(3) 112 people have been admitted to the unit.
(4) 100 of the admitted patients are Aboriginal people.
(5) Five patients have been referred to Graylands Hospital.
(6) All five of the referred patients are Aboriginal people.
I am not sure about the timing of this but I know there was a
time when the secure inpatient area of the new Broome unit had not been
authorised. That is now authorised, of course, and it may well be that those
five people were referred to Graylands Hospital because they needed a higher
level of care than that which was available to them at the new Broome unit at
that time or they required a much higher level of care than what could be
provided, even with the secure unit at Broome.
