Thank you. We passed through the
Legislative Council last week laws to assist both commercial and residential landlords and renters. I am very pleased with and
thankful to the Minister for Commerce, and also all the upper house members who voted for the laws, bearing in mind,
as I am advised, that the state opposition did not vote for some of the
packages. We are very grateful to those members of the Nationals WA and the
government who supported the laws. I also
thank Hon Alannah MacTiernan for battling on late into Friday night to ensure
that the laws were passed . Thank you to government members, National
Party members and Greens members who supported the laws.
The laws are nationally consistent.
Indeed, part of the national cabinet process was to come up with laws to ensure
that those protections are in place during the COVID-19 emergency period and, in particular, to support both commercial and residential
tenants, particularly vulnerable tenants. I am very pleased that we were able
to pass those laws against some considerable opposition by members of the
Liberal Party.
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I have read Hansard .
Obviously, as part of that, we will put in place some measures to support those
parties in coming days and they will be consistent with, but not identical to,
what has happened in other states.
