I refer to the south metropolitan region railway line, the residents around Elanora Drive and question 339 I asked on 26 May. (1) Is it true that the residents have asked for vibration meters to be placed in their houses and the request has been refused? (2) Is it true that the contractor is placing the meters in soft soil in the residents’ gardens instead? (3) Have complaints been made to the minister’s office about furniture moving across the floor? (4) Why is the minister not ensuring that contractors are complying with noise and vibration requirements and are not violating householders’ rights to the quiet enjoyment of their homes? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) Some residents have requested vibration metering inside their homes. The Public Transport Authority has advised that vibration measurement is usually taken by installing an accelerometer and recording equipment on a metal stake that is inserted in the ground around or directly on the ground close to the building on the side nearest to the source of the vibration. This practice has been adopted by the contractors, Rail Link Joint Venture. (4) The Public Transport Authority believes that Rail Link Joint Venture is fulfilling its contractual obligations regarding noise and vibration requirements. However, if the member provides specific details, the minister will ask the Public Transport Authority to investigate.
