I refer the minister to question without notice 1623 and his answer given on 5 December 2003. (1) Has the Water Corporation received approval from the Water and Rivers Commission to draw 167 gigalitres of ground water for the Perth integrated water supply scheme for 2003-04? (2) Does the Water Corporation anticipate utilising the full 167 gigalitres this year, unlike last year when it extracted only 158 gigalitres despite being licensed to extract more? (3) Since the Water Corporation was given special approval to draw an extra 21 gigalitres of water for the PIWSS through the new Perth bores developed last year, why has the Water Corporation not made full use of its approved ground water supply capacity to meet public water demand this year by adding the special approval to the 167 gigalitres it was licensed to draw in 2002-03? (4) If the Water Corporation is making full use of the 21 gigalitres from the new bores, will the minister indicate in which previously established bore fields water production levels have been reduced to accommodate the new water supply? Hon TOM STEPHENS

On behalf of the Minister for Government Enterprises, I provide the following reply - (1) The Water Corporation has received approval from the commission to abstract 158 gigalitres of ground water for 2003-04. (2) The Water Corporation expects to fully utilise the approved extraction of 158 gigalitres for 2003-04. (3) The community will fully benefit from the 21 extra gigalitres provided by the three new Yarragadee bores and the new west Mirrabooka scheme constructed in 2002-03 as part of the Water and Rivers Commission approved total ground water abstraction of 158 gigalitres for 2003-04. (4) The increase in abstraction from the three new Yarragadee bores and the west Mirrabooka scheme in 2003-04 is eight gigalitres more than in 2002-03. This increase is offset by the following reductions in abstractions in other bore fields: one gigalitre at Mirrabooka; 0.3 gigalitres at Jandakot; 2.2 gigalitres at Wanneroo; 1.2 gigalitres at Pinjar; and three gigalitres at Lexia.
