Green steel—Procurement guidelines
1062. Hon Tjorn Sibma to
the Leader of the House representing the
Minister for Manufacturing:
I refer to the
Premier's commitment to local green steel and the intention to amend
procurement rules to mandate the inclusion of the product in the construction
of government projects.
(1) What is the technical and economic feasibility
of the production of green steel in Western Australia presently?
(2) If not presently technically or economically
feasible, when will it be?
(3) At what stage will procurement guidelines be
redrafted to give effect to the requirement to incorporate the material?
(4) With whom will the government consult to draft
these amendments?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) There are several pathways for the
production of green steel, including steel produced using low-carbon processes
and/or recycled materials. Technical and economic feasibility is dependent on a
proponent's project and approach to production. The state government will
publish an addendum for steel to the Western
Australian Industry Participation Strategy 2024 following consultation
with local suppliers, industry bodies, trade unions and other relevant
stakeholders.
