PERTH CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL — CEILING
PANEL COLLAPSE
722. Mr R.H. COOK to the Minister for
Health:
I
refer to the ceiling collapse at the new Perth Children's Hospital
yesterday, where, fortunately, no-one was injured.
(1) How did the
fallen ceiling panels come to be waterlogged?
(2) With the
hospital already supposed to be open, why is the roof apparently leaking so
much that the panelling is getting damaged?
(3) Will a thorough
investigation be undertaken into the cause of this incident, who will be
undertaking it and when will the minister be reporting on it?

(1)–(3) I
thank the member for the question, although probably it should more properly be
directed to the Treasurer because the Perth Children's Hospital project
is still a construction project. It has not been handed over to the health
system as yet in fact, albeit the commissioning of the hospital is very well
advanced and very well underway. However, the Treasurer and I do communicate
frequently —

The
SPEAKER : That is enough!
Mr J.H.D. DAY : — as do our offices and as do Strategic Projects and Asset
Sales and the Department of Health.

Mr

The
SPEAKER : Member for Cockburn, I call you to order now for the first time.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : I understand that two ceiling panels did fall from the ceiling
of the atrium yesterday. That has most likely been caused by the ingress of
water as a result of very heavy rain over the weekend, apparently. This is the
responsibility of John Holland Group Pty Ltd, the managing contractor. It has
the responsibility, obviously, for rectifying the situation. We are still
awaiting updated advice from it on the investigation that it is undertaking and
the report that it is presenting. However, obviously Strategic Projects within
Treasury is very much engaged with John Holland in ensuring that appropriate
steps are being taken, but this is primarily still the responsibility of John
Holland, albeit, as the client of this project, we have a very strong interest
in ensuring that the site is entirely safe and appropriately constructed.
