FIREARMS —
BUYBACK PROGRAM
1211. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the media statement dated
7 July 2023 titled ''Prohibited very high-powered firearms buyback a success''.
(1) Can the
minister explain the discrepancy between the 185 firearms purchased by the
state government through the buyback and the
280 firearms removed in total, and why 95 firearms were not subject to the buyback?
(2) Since the 1
July buyback concluded, has the Western Australia Police Force identified any
additional prohibited firearms; and, if so —
(a) how many have been identified;
and
(b) how are WA police managing the
surrender or disposal of these firearms?
(3) Does the
state government anticipate any additional buyback will be required to coincide
with the proposed firearms reforms?
