I refer to the fact that the Government supports the concept of a northern security shield, the Premier yesterday introduced counter-terrorism legislation into this Parliament, and his federal colleagues have unveiled a policy to beef up border protection with a coastguard. (1) Does the Premier agree with his federal Labor Party colleague Simon Crean that the Navy must continue to play a crucial role in national defence and counter-terrorism strategies? (2) If not, why not? (3) Does he agree that the port of Broome is a key component of the national effort on border protection and vital to our counter-terrorism strategy? (4) If not, why not? (5) Why does his Government still refuse to commit to providing $5.5 million of its share of the $14 million needed to upgrade the port of Broome? (6) Is the Premier aware that naval vessels cannot be guaranteed priority access to the port of Broome and often have to wait long periods to berth? (7) If not, why not? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(7) Of course the Navy should play an important role in Australia’s defence. I am sure that under the ministerial responsibility of the member for Armadale, the facilities required for the port of Broome to play the role it needs to play in our system will be provided. Mr R.F. Johnson: That is a worry. Dr G.I. GALLOP: What is a worry? Mr R.F. Johnson: Leaving something to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I see. The Broome port has the capacity, and it can be used for the defence of Australia. On Friday I will receive a more comprehensive briefing from the commonwealth Department of Defence. I will raise with its officers a range of issues about the proper defence of the north of Australia.
