I refer to the answer to the revised Wungong Thinning Trial, and I ask -
(1) Will the Minister please table maps that show -
(a) the areas that have been thinned;
(b) the areas that are still to be thinned; and
(c) identified cockatoo habitat trees?
(2) What will be the average amount of tree per hectare left after the revised thinning treatment?

(1) [see tabled paper no]
(a) Areas that have been thinned are marked in pink.
(b) Areas that are still to be thinned are marked in orange.
(c) Management of forests for black cockatoos is addressed through the implementation of the
Forest Management Plan 2004-2013
(FMP) through a range of strategies applied at the whole of forest, landscape and operational levels, including the network of formal conservation reserves and informal reserves, fauna habitat zones, and by retaining habitat elements, including habitat trees with hollows, or the potential to develop hollows in areas subject to timber harvesting.
(2) The number of trees which remain after thinning will vary considerably depending on the tree size, species distribution and structure of the regrowth forest. After thinning, the numbers of tree stems (defined as > 10 cm at breast height) could range from 35 per hectare (if the trees are mostly large) to as many as 100 if the average tree size is smaller. Thinning will be undertaken in accordance with silvicultural guidelines which will be developed with public consultation approved by the Department of Environment and Conservation.
