STUDENT ASSISTANCE PAYMENT
157. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
Madam Speaker, before I ask my
question of the Premier, I would like to put on record the opposition's
recognition of your thirtieth year as a member of this place and thank you for
your service throughout that period of time.
[Applause.]
Mr
R.S. LOVE : On Sunday, when the
Premier made his schoolchildren cash splash announcement, we were six weeks and
three days into term 1. Families in Western Australia are struggling with the
cost of living under his watch. School uniforms and back-to-school
supplies are bought by families for their children before term 1 commences. Why
is the Premier's government six weeks and three days late for school?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please!

Madam Speaker, may I also place on the
record for the chamber my congratulations to you.
What
does the member care? He does not support it. Why does he come in here asking
me technical questions a bout a program that he does not support? The
Leader of the Opposition and his usurper, the Leader of the Liberal Party, have
been undermining this program ever since we announced it. They are the only two
people in the state who do not support Western Australian families with
school-age children getting cost-of-living support.
At the beginning of the school year,
families right across Western Australia were already enjoying a summer of free public transport. Families everywhere were
already benefiting from the great work that my government is doing to
help Western Australian families with the cost of living. Now we have this next
appropriate measure that allows people to get assistance with the extra costs
that we know people have as a result of their kids going to school.
Members opposite may quibble about
whether there are costs now or costs later, but they have kids at school. I am
a dad from Kwinana; I am always aware of the costs of getting kids to school. I
am reminded of an email that was sent to the member for Bateman. It stated —
Just wanted to say thanks to the Cook
Government for the school payment.
We don't usually get any
government funding but, with a recently unemployed husband and a sizable
mortgage, this non means tested payment is really appreciated!
We
will use the funding for new sneakers and two long sleeve school t-shirts for
winter for our little Year One girl.
There we go! WA families appreciate
the student assistance payment.
This is a great program. Over 300 000
families in Western Australia will benefit from it. Everyone believes that this
is a great announcement. The only people in this place, or perhaps in the
state, who do not think it is a good announcement are the member for Vasse and
the Leader of the Opposition.
Visitors — Applecross Senior High School
The
SPEAKER : On behalf of the member
for Bateman, I acknowledge the students and teachers from Applecross Senior
High School, who are with us in the gallery today. I welcome you to Parliament.
Mr T. Healy interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Southern River, that is unparliamentary.
