STATE BUDGET 2015–16 — FIONA
STANLEY HOSPITAL — MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
306. Mr M.H. TAYLOR to the Minister for
Health:
I acknowledge in the public gallery
students from Canning Vale Primary School, which is in the electorate of the
Southern River.
Prior to question time today, I was
at the Fiona Stanley Hospital site with the Minister for Mental Health to
announce extra funding in the budget for mental health services. Can you please
inform the house how this funding will improve mental health services in
Western Australia?

The Minister for Mental Health was
there with the local member talking about what will be in the budget for mental
health in the forthcoming years. I am very pleased that she was able to
announce total funding of $612 million in the budget to cover mental health,
which is an additional $30 million on the previous year. In fact, it represents
a massive increase of more than 40 per cent in funding since we came to
government. The funding will provide for some excellent programs. I refer
particularly to the $2.5 million that will be provided in 2015–16 for a
youth-specific specialist mental health community treatment service—that
is a mouthful!—at Fiona Stanley Hospital that particularly targets
people aged between 16 and 24 years. As we know, mental health problems in this
state are significantly increasing. When we were in opposition, we committed to
having a specific Minister for Mental Health, which we provided once we came to
government. That has been a massive step forward in the management of mental
health in the state; hence, the 41 per cent in funding since we came to
government to assist this critical area of need. Mental health management has
increased at hospitals, such as Joondalup Health Campus while there will be
additional beds at Midland Public Hospital and the new Perth Children's
Hospital. Of course, Fiona Stanley Hospital not only has additional mental
health beds, but also particularly caters for mothers with postnatal
depression, because it has a special area for looking after with mothers who
are suffering from that mental health problem. So, it is a big step forward
under this government. There is a lot more still to be done—we all
recognise that—but this government is clearly up to the task.
