I refer to the Government’s commitment to reconciliation. (1) Does the Government recognise the enormous community momentum created by the bridge walk for reconciliation at the end of last year? (2) Does the Government recognise that this event was the culmination of years of hard, largely unpaid work and coordinated effort by members of the community? (3) Why is the Government not providing support and funding for the ongoing coordination of the movement for reconciliation? (4) Although the funding of individual projects is welcome, how does the Government see these projects being coordinated in a statewide strategy? (5) Is the minister aware that the previous Government had offered funding of $75 000 for a coordinating unit within Australians for Reconciliation (WA)? (6) Will the Government make a similar commitment? (7) If not, why not? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) Yes. (3)-(4) The Government has considered funding for Australians for Reconciliation (WA), but decided that the best use of available funds would be towards projects that would directly contribute to reconciliation. The allocation of funds will be made on a regional basis and will be allocated by agreement in each region by a panel comprising a member of the regional Commission of Elders Council, a local representative of the stolen generation and a Department of Indigenous Affairs officer. The Government has allocated $105 000 and this is consistent with its pre-election commitment to reconciliation projects. (5) This Government is not aware of any formal commitment. (6)-(7) No. See answer to parts (3) and (4).
