Esperance Senior High School
488. Mr Peter Rundle to
the Minister for Education:
I refer to the dire
state of infrastructure at Esperance Senior High School, which has 121 defects
logged, the highest number of any school in Western Australia.
(1) When will the minister stop tinkering at the
edges and commit to a full redevelopment of Esperance Senior High School to
replace the ageing school, built in the 1960s, with a modern, fit-for-purpose
facility that meets the needs of Esperance students and teachers?
(2) I note that $650,000 was allocated in the 2024
state budget for planning works. Can the minister confirm the timeline for this
project and promise that she will not keep kicking the can down the road?

I thank the member
for his question. I acknowledge his strong interest in Esperance secondary
college over an extended period of time. He is a great local member because all
good local members champion the public schools within their electorate. He does
that well.
(1)–(2) As the member acknowledged, this
government is the first government that has ever put some investment in the
school by committing $650,000 to do that important planning work, which will
define a scope of work for Esperance secondary school. That work is ongoing,
and the member knows that to be the case. Esperance secondary school is an
important school that provides great educational opportunities for secondary
students in that region. It is important that we continue to support all our
schools, including Esperance.
I also note that the federal
government has invested $3 million to provide important upgrades in that school.
It is important to also put on the record all the investments by Labor
governments in public schools, whether they are federal or state governments.
