COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
(1) When will the Premier accept that, like the Ombudsman, the commissioner for children and young people is his responsibility? (2) When will the Premier take on board the opposition’s and Greens’ amendments to the legislation that would make the commissioner truly independent, as requested by the community; and prove that his government cares about children by instructing his Treasurer to provide at least $5 million in funding for the commission, instead of the totally inadequate $1.5 million budgeted last year? The PRESIDENT : There is a bit of argument in that question but no doubt that is not within the answer. Hon KIM CHANCE

There is probably a bit of argument in the answer as well. I thank Hon Barbara Scott for the courtesy of providing notice of this question. (1)-(2) The government has developed its preferred model for a children’s commissioner. If the honourable member thought the community preferred Hon Barbara Scott’s model, the Liberal Party should have introduced it in its eight years of government. The government is spending a record amount on child protection.
