2. Only the five islands mentioned in the answer to (1) are known to contain feral animals. 3. The Department is concerned about the presence of feral animals in the Recherche Archipelago. The islands are recognised as important conservation areas with a number of distinctive and threatened taxa, important seabird breeding sites and vegetation communities that do not occur on the mainland. The Esperance Coastal Reserves Draft Management Plan (which includes all the islands in the Recherche Archipelago) will address the issue of feral animals on islands and suggest investigation, control, monitoring or eradication strategies. The planning process for this management plan is currently being undertaken by the Esperance Parks and Reserves Advisory Committee. A 1986 proposal by the Department to eradicate the Cull Island feral goat population met with significant local community opposition and was not undertaken. Instead the goats are culled periodically to control the population. On Woody Island some baiting and trapping of black rats does occur. There is currently no program for the eradication of feral animals on the other islands in the Recherche Archipelago. 4. Control or eradication strategies will be determined through the management plan process.
