I thank the minister for responding so quickly to the needs of Vasse Primary School by funding a new toilet block. However, the education requirements in my electorate do not stop there. (1) What progress is being made on the local area education plan option under which two new middle schools would be built in the Busselton shire and the existing high school would become an upper school? (2) What is the minister’s preferred timing for the construction and operation of the first of these new middle schools? (3) Can the minister give the Vasse community any indication of the progress on a new arts block for its existing primary school, especially in light of the imminent commencement of Vasse-Newtown urban development, which will eventually be home to some 7 000 people? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(3) I thank the member for Vasse for the question. I also recognise that he has been a strong advocate for schooling and education in his electorate. We had a joint interest in Vasse Primary School a few years ago when the Queen paid a visit to it. There was an issue then about the lack of toilet provision. A toilet was put in for the Queen and then taken away when she left. Mr M. McGowan: Who was the minister? Mr A.J. CARPENTER: The now Leader of the Opposition. In answer to the third part of the question on the arts block, I regret to say that there is no provision as yet in the budget for an arts centre at Vasse Primary School; however, I will take up that matter with the department. As the member for Vasse knows, I visited the school last week and had a look around. It is a very good school with a very good principal and there is a necessity for change there. In answer to parts (1) and (2), good progress is the simple answer to the first question. As part of the local area education plan, I referred back to the community the option for a senior campus where Busselton Senior High School now sits, a new middle school at Vasse and another middle school some years down the track. We are now awaiting the community’s response and I am hopeful that when we get that response we can move forward. As the member for Vasse knows, the timetable for development of a new high school is generally about two and a half to three years - 30 months. I believe that in the foreseeable future we will be able to see the realisation of a new asset down there. I think that answer also covers the points raised about timing. Mr Speaker, the Vasse area is growing rapidly. It is difficult to keep up in a planning sense. The Busselton strip is growing at an annual rate of about six per cent. It is incumbent on us to keep up with the provision of education and other resources, and we will.
