279. Dr CONSTABLE to the Minister for the Environment:
I refer to an article in CALM News in February 1994 titled World Exclusive Conocurvone Contract and the Minister's answer to question on notice No. 2062 of March 2000 and ask why was it decided to terminate the 1993 agreement with AMRAD when the agreement had been announced with so much fanfare by the Minister, Dr Syd Shea, the Premier and the Deputy Premier?

The Minister Replied:
As announced by the then Minister for the Environment in his media statement dated 18 August 1995, the 1993 CALM/AMRAD "was terminated by AMRAD in February 1995 for commercial reasons, after it became apparent that the first line of research was not producing the desired results. Both parties began experimenting with new approaches and now believe their chances of success are much greater."
A second CALM/AMRAD agreement was signed on 31 July 1995.
