CORRUPTION AND CRIME COMMISSION — POLICE
INVESTIGATION — OVERSIGHT
525. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's press conference —
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Landsdale, I understand your
frustration, but your interjection is disorderly. I ask the Leader of the
Liberal Party to start from the beginning.
Ms L. METTAM :
I refer to the Premier's press conference regarding
Floreat murderer Mark Bombara at which the Premier stated that potential flags
were not raised and not observed and that he was committed to being accountable
in relation to all these matters and to publicly release those answers as soon
as he received them.
(1) Has the
Premier or his office either received or been briefed on the report from Western
Australia Police Force or the Corruption and Crime Commission?
(2) Why has
the Minister for Police advised the other place that this report will be
provided only to the coroner and that the release of this information is a matter
for the coroner?

(1)–(2) Once again, the member could have asked the
minister, but I am flattered.
Ms L. Mettam : It's about your commitment.
Mr R.H. COOK : We are committed to providing
information to the Western Australian community so that it can get answers as
well as the Bombara family. Obviously, there may be processes that are more
pertinent to provide to the coroner as part of the broader investigations that
will take place into this dreadful event. Someone with a legally owned handgun
went into a home and shot two innocent people who were trying to protect a family
friend from family and domestic violence. It was a horrific crime. That is why
everyone, I think, seeks answers to know where this insanity comes from. We
will do everything we can to provide the community with answers, but obviously
a range of police and legal processes have to be observed.
We cannot escape the
reality that this gentleman undertook this horrific crime with handguns. I cannot
for a moment understand why a member of the community living in
metropolitan Perth, beyond those who compete in shooting competitions, needs a handgun.
That is why my government took the bold and important actions of bringing in
the tightest and most modern gun law reforms in this state's history.
That law reform was long overdue, even since the
Port Arthur massacre. There were two political parties that were left wanting
on that legislation. The Leader of the Liberal Party and the other
members of her party absented themselves from the chamber when the vote on
these laws was counted. The Leader of the Liberal Party was missing in action.
She did not even have the guts to stand up for what she believes in. At least
those in the green party—the Nationals WA—had the guts to stand
up. The Nationals members opposed gun law reform in its entirety. When it comes
to people who stand up against violence and against the perpetrators of
violence with guns, I will not be lectured to by the Leader of the Liberal
Party in particular. You are gutless! The Liberal Party is gutless when it
comes to gun law reform in this state and the National Party, by opposing it
altogether, is condemned.
