I thank the member for his question. I think this is a great
discussion to have from this side of the house, given the investment that the
Liberal–National government has put into cycling infrastructure in Western
Australia. There are just a few facts that I think are important for the
member. There has been $103 million spent on initiatives since 2008. There are
272 kilometres of off-road shared paths and 75 kilometres of on-road bike lanes
have been constructed. There has been $3 million for working with local
governments around trying to identify safer streets and safer roads within
local communities. Even though that is the responsibility of the cities, we are
working alongside them to create safer environments in our local communities.
There will be $90 million over the next four years for further cycling
infrastructure. Every time we undertake a major piece of road or rail
infrastructure, we work on ensuring that there are principal shared paths. Over
time, if we look at the transport plan through to three and a half million people
in 2050, we are looking at increasing the principal shared path to 850 kilometres.
This government has been committed to all modes of transport and looking at an
integrated approach to transport, which is a requirement of a growing city. I appreciate
the opportunity of sharing those facts with the house.
