GINDALBIE
METALS LTD — BADJA STATION
644. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the
minister representing the Minister for Lands:
I refer to Gindalbie Metals' proposed nuclear waste
dump on Badja Station in the Shire of Yalgoo.
(1) Was an
internal memo created by the minister, his staff or his department stating that
a letter should be written asking for Badja Station to be considered in a
national review of sites for the nuclear waste dump?
(2) Have
further discussions been initiated with Gindalbie Metals to discuss strategic
partnerships, including the proposed nuclear waste dump?

On behalf of the Minister for
Housing representing the Minister for Lands, I thank the member for some notice
of this question.
(1) The
commonwealth government is currently conducting a review into potential land
sites that can store low-level radioactive waste such as that derived as a
result of the use of radiation in the sterilisation of medical equipment,
syringes, dressings, surgical gloves, x-rays and radiotherapy. The minister's
office requested the drafting of a letter for the minister's
consideration, providing general support for Badja as a potential site, subject
to community support and approval from the land's traditional owners.
(2) No.
