PUBLIC
TRANSPORT — ELECTION COMMITMENTS
162. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. I refer to a policy document
released by the Premier that indicates that commuters will be able to use the
new light rail by 2018. Will the new light rail be in place by 2018; and, if
not, when will it be in place?

That is the target. The light rail —
Mrs
M.H. Roberts : It was guaranteed before the election; now it's just
a target.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Midland!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : That is a complex project; there may be land resumptions. How
did the former Labor government go on the Perth Arena project for completion
dates? How did it do? How many years out was that—about three? We laid
out —
Mrs
M.H. Roberts interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Midland, I call you to order for the first time!
Premier, can you answer the question and we can move on?
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : When the Labor Party was in government, it promised Fiona
Stanley Hospital by 2010. It actually did not even get it started. It was built
by this government and it is now approaching completion. The record on this
side of the house is strong and what we promise we deliver.
Mrs M.H. Roberts interjected.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Look at the record compared with the appalling record of members opposite! That
is why they are on that side of the house and that is why we are on this side
of the house.
We are committed to those projects and they will be
delivered. Can I tell members the exact date they will be finished? No, I
cannot, because there is a lot of engineering, planning, land acquisition,
rezoning and the like to take place. But be assured that those projects will be
delivered.
