EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS - VULNERABLE STUDENTS
(1) Given the results of a recent Australian early development index survey of year 1 students in Murchison schools, identifying nearly 40 per cent of those students as highly vulnerable, has the minister provided funding for the development and implementation of early intervention program in Murchison and/or similarly affected schools? (2) If yes to (1), in which schools has this been provided, and what is the projected cost of those programs in the 2006-07 state budget and the forward estimates for the 2007-08 financial year? Hon JON FORD

On behalf of the Minister for Education and Training, I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) No. The Australian early development index only provides information at the population level. It does not identify individual children or participating schools. Without the names of specific schools, it is not possible to provide a costing of early childhood programs or any other early intervention programs provided in public schools.
