Will the minister explain to the House if there is any truth in the concerns expressed by the member for Dawesville that the Peel Development Commission faces closure? Mr McGINTY

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Mandurah for the question. Mr Barnett: That was a very dirty little trick. You should raise the standards on that side, Attorney General. Mr McGINTY: I was waiting for the Leader of the Opposition to stop mumbling away to himself and listen to my answer because this is an important issue. The Peel Development Commission was established by the former Labor Government in the early 1990s. It has been so successful that the people from the neighbouring city of Rockingham have made a bid to be encompassed by that commission. In addition, envious eyes from Bunbury have been looking towards the Mandurah and Peel region. During its almost 10 years in operation the Peel Development Commission has been very successful in focusing attention on both the economic and social needs of the region. I was dumbfounded to hear the member for Dawesville’s suggestion, which I can only presume is hysterically fanciful. I do not know why anyone in his right mind would suggest that such a great Labor Party initiative should come to an end in the light of its success during the past decade. Mr Marshall: Why isn’t the landlord’s lease being renewed? Mr Graham interjected. Mr McGINTY: The Peel Development Commission has been a great success. It will continue to have a very long life as long as this Government is in power. The Chairman of the Peel Development Commission, Mr John Collett, is an excellent chairman and is doing a great job, as is Mr Ken Fisher, the chief executive officer. Mr Marshall: Why is it under review? Mr McGINTY: It is not under review; I am telling the member for Dawesville that it is there to stay permanently. There is no question of it being under review in any way, shape or form. I cannot understand why he wants to sell his own region short with his mischief-making, muckraking and spreading of fanciful notions. I can only presume that poor old Uncle Arthur has lost his marbles, because there is no truth whatsoever in the stories he is peddling in the Peel region. The Peel Development Commission is a great Labor Party initiative. It will remain a great development commission and will continue to look after the people of the Peel region notwithstanding the member for Dawesville’s negativity. Several government members: Hear, hear!
