617. Hon BRIAN ELLIS to the minister representing the
Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the animal feeding study on genetically modified
canola conducted by Dr Judy Carman.
(1) How long
is it since the former Labor government commissioned the GM feeding trial
report from Dr Judy Carman?
(2) How much
did the former Labor government pay Dr Carman to produce this report?
(3) Has Dr
Carman provided her report to the current government; and, if not, what is the
current status of this report?
(4) Is it the
case that Dr Carman has a history of anti-GM campaigning?

10 months.
(2) It paid
$92 000.
(3) No. In
December 2009, Dr Carman advised the Department of Agriculture and Food of
Western Australia that $92 000 had been spent and that the results of the trial
would be published in the first half of 2010. As the results were not
published, I, as Minister for Agriculture and Food, wrote to Dr Carman in early
2011 requesting urgent advice on the publication outcomes and implications of
the study. DAFWA wrote to Dr Carman in May 2012 requesting a written account of
the expenditure of funds or a copy of the research data and conclusions.
