NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK ROLLOUT — MORLEY
AND NORANDA
1226. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
Leader of the House representing the Minister for Innovation:
I refer to the many residents and
businesses in Morley and Noranda who suffer unworkably slow internet speeds,
many of whom are still on dial-up and ADSL1. New residents have been told by
Telstra that there are no available ports and therefore they will not get
internet access.
(1) Has the state
government made any advocacy and/or representations to the federal Minister for
Communications or NBN Co Ltd to bring forward the rollout of national broadband
network to Noranda and Morley?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) If yes to (1), who made the
representations, and on what date and to whom?
(4) Has the state
government received any requests from local members of Parliament seeking
support to improve internet access in these areas?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) NBN
Co Ltd is an Australian government-owned corporation that has set the plan for
the rollout of the NBN, which is being implemented nationally, including Western
Australia. The office of the Minister for Innovation has been briefed by NBN Co
on the rollout and expressed the government's view that Western Australia
should be prioritised. The Western Australian government has no power to direct
NBN Co on its rollout schedule.
