AT-RISK YOUTH — SAFESPACE PROGRAM
507. Mr T.J. HEALY to the Minister for Police:
I
refer to the Cook Labor government's continued support for programs to
assist at-risk youth across Western Australia.
(1) Can the
minister outline to the house what the government's support for the
police and community youth centre's safeSPACE program means for young
people across the state and their families?
(2) Can the minister advise the house how this
important program is supporting the most vulnerable and at- risk youth in
our community?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for his question. He is well
known for his many years of experience in supporting at- risk youth. I was
last week in the Kimberley seeking advice from Aboriginal community
organisations, police, corrective services staff, shires and juvenile justice
teams, in the company of the member for Kimberley for part of it, to focus on
initiatives that we might be able to pursue to tackle the challenge of juvenile
crime, particularly in the regions. One of the good things I was able to do at
that time with the member for Kimberley was
visit the Broome Police and Community Youth Centre and announce a funding initiative of the Cook Labor government for
the PCYC to continue its safeSPACE programs in a range of towns across
the regions and also in Gosnells in the city. That funding, delivered by the
Minister for Regional Development—thank you, Minister Punch—will
ensure that a program that is much loved in Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton,
Gosnells and Bunbury, and in some other towns that we fund, but in those ones
that are particularly funded —
Ms J.L. Hanns interjected.
Mr P. PAPALIA : I know that
Collie gets it as well, but we fund that already.
The programs at those sites will
continue to be delivered. At those five sites over the last 12 months, 1 000
children received programs aimed at supporting at-risk youth to ensure that
they have a safe, warm place after hours on school days, sometimes on weekends,
and particularly during school holidays, and are provided with an alternative to an often challenging, complex or, in some
cases, even neglectful home site. It was great to say that we are delivering $4.6 million additional funding to the PCYC.
We already fund the same program in
Collie. It is supported by the state and federal governments and Rio Tinto in
Roebourne. It is a great program delivered across the state in a lot of
different areas. We fund it in Kununurra as
well. It ensures that kids who might otherwise be vulnerable to getting on the
wrong path due to neglect in their communities or, even worse, at home
and may get into crime on the streets are given an alternative pathway to get
good mentoring and support. It is wonderful. We saved the PCYC under your
leadership, Madam Speaker, in the last Parliament, and we continue to support
and grow the services delivered by that wonderful institution in Western Australia
into the future.
