PUBLIC SERVANTS — DISTRICT ALLOWANCES
I refer to the minister’s letter to the Community and Public Sector Union and the Civil Service Association dated 1 September 2001, in which the minister gave support to their claim for increased district allowance rates and exception towns. Can the minister give details of how this government will address his acknowledged shortfall in the district allowance rates; and when public sector employees working in regional Western Australia can expect to benefit from the increase in district allowance rates that the minister supported in September 2008? Hon WENDY DUNCAN

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The minister is currently considering proposals to increase the district allowances from the royalties for regions fund for public servants residing in regional areas. The responsibility for negotiating these claims with the unions resides with the Minister for Commerce.
