Cost-of-living relief—Events
537. Ms
Colleen Egan to the Treasurer:
I refer to the Cook
Labor government's track record on delivering for Western Australian families.
(1) Can the Treasurer advise the house how this
government is providing WA families access and support to attend some of our
most loved events and venues?
(2) Is the Treasurer aware of anyone who does not
support these cost-of-living measures?

Labor government's track record on delivering for Western Australian families.

most loved events and venues?
(2) Is the Treasurer aware of anyone who does not
support these cost-of-living measures?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for that
question. Of course, over many years this government has been supporting
Western Australian families, whether through general cost-of-living support
with things like the energy rebate or through targeted initiatives,
particularly targeting families to support their kids having access to events
and also key services. We introduced the student assistance payment. We have
delivered free public transport for kids to get to school. We have fare-free
Sundays. We delivered free Zoo passes and we saw the incredible uptake, with, I
think, 115,000 passes or claims, and over 400,000 attending. We have seen free
Museum entry. We have KidSport and, of course, a whole range of initiatives. We
are rolling out the Kids Access All Areas Pass for this summer, again,
supporting Western Australian families, letting their kids have access to some
of the incredible events around the state.
Who has opposed us every step of
the way? It has been the Liberal Party and Nationals WA every step of the way.
Who said we should not be subsidising public transport to that degree? It was
the Liberal and National Parties. Who criticised the student assistance payment
and said it should be means tested? It was the Liberal and National parties.
Who criticised our free tickets to the Zoo and the Royal Show? It was the
Liberal Party members. It was quite staggering when last week we got a question
about the Royal Show. First of all, of course, that question was misleading. It
said we did not provide assistance, which we did. It was in relation to free
passes. What did the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party say about free passes
just last year? She told the Parliament that the government's cost-of-living
measures, including free Zoo passes and Royal Show tickets, were little more
than a sugar hit and a photo opportunity.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt!
Interjections are not required.
Ms Rita Saffioti: We
got the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party saying no free passes and we had the
member for Central Wheatbelt saying give free passes. The question for the
Leader of the Opposition is:—

The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt!
Ms Rita Saffioti: —Who is he backing? Is it
his new BFF or the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party? Who is the Leader of the
Opposition backing? Is it his new BFF? I know he is his BFF because I found the
BFF friendship bracelet in the hallway! The member for Central Wheatbelt tried
to find the Leader of the Opposition in the hallway to give him his new BFF
bracelet. Who is the Leader of the Opposition backing? Does he back the Deputy
Leader of the Liberal Party? Does he back his deputy or does he back his new
BFF? Of course, then you have the Leader of the Nationals WA, who is looking
over his shoulder all the time.

Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt, there is no
need for the interjection. I am warning you.
Ms Rita Saffioti: The Leader of the National Party
said, "Where is my friendship bracelet?" Who is the Leader of the
Opposition backing—his deputy or his new BFF? Who is he backing? Is it
both ways again, Leader of the Opposition—50% here, 50% there? He will
go whichever way the wind blows.
We will continue to
support Western Australian families despite the criticism of the other side who
have criticised—
