I asked this yesterday with regard to the city rail project. (1) Will the minister please confirm that the contractors have encountered more than 100 000 cubic metres of soil contamination during drilling and excavation in The Esplanade and Perth yard sites? (2) If so, will the minister please provide details of the categories of contamination of the soil and the approximate volume of each category encountered? (3) Will the minister provide an assurance that there is no public safety risk in the contamination of the soil or its removal? (4) What is the anticipated cost and who will pay for its removal? (5) If the contractor will pay, will the minister please table the relevant clause of the contract? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of the question. I am advised that the assumptions contained in the preamble to the question asked yesterday are baseless. (1) No. (2) Not applicable. (3) Yes. (4) The contracted sum covers the removal of 25 200 cubic metres. There is no evidence to suggest that this volume will be significantly exceeded. (5) Contaminated material is dealt with under clause 4.6 of the contract 27/03 project deed, which has been tabled. I also have an answer to the question the Leader of the Opposition was seeking to ask earlier. The PRESIDENT: I will give the opportunity to the Leader of the Opposition later if he seeks it.
