COMMUNITY SAFETY — DANNY HODGSON
726. Ms L. METTAM to the Attorney General:
I have a supplementary question.
Given it is the Attorney General's bail laws that resulted in this life-changing
and unprovoked attack, will he guarantee that Mr Hodgson will receive some
certainty or the settlement before the Attorney General retires and Parliament
rises this year?

AnswerView source ↗

With regard to the bail laws that
were introduced by the previous government, the Liberal government, in relation
to youth bail—it was a terrible thing that he breached his bail and
went into the city where he should not have been. There are a lot of people who
are charged with offences and there is a presumption in favour of bail unless a
schedule 2 offence has been committed. Those laws will stand. We cannot stuff
our whole prison system up with everyone who
is charged with an offence. The main thing is that Danny and his fiancee
attended my office personally and have been reassured by me. They have
been most receptive and thankful that we have got this process on the road to
come to a final settlement.
