❓ Dr Constable questions the government's decision to expand Bandyup Women's Prison to accommodate 167 inmates, given that only 90 women were incarcerated there in November 2001. The government justifies the expansion due to a rising prison population and the need to consolidate prisoners from regional areas.

During the past year the number of prisoners held at Bandyup Women’s Prison reached 148 and it is anticipated that once the building project is completed and women are returned from the regional prisons, that the prison population will eventually reach the design limit.
