MULTIPURPOSE STADIUM
I refer the minister to his statement in the House on 28 June that he would immediately start a review into elite sports facilities in Western Australia. (1) Given the success of last weekend’s Tri-Nation Springboks-Wallabies rugby union match and increasing public demand for a multipurpose built soccer/rugby stadium in Western Australia, when will this review be completed? (2) Is the minister aware that the Leederville Oval Action Group has collected more than 1 700 signatures from local residents who are against the redevelopment of Leederville Oval as the home of soccer in Western Australia; and, if so, what assurances can the minister give the residents of Leederville? Mr CARPENTER

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The review of facilities is due to be finalised and presented by the end of September. (2) I am aware of a petition process. I was not specifically aware of the number of signatures but I was aware that there were many. The possible redevelopment of Leederville Oval is one of many possibilities that are in train for sports facilities. It remains for us to review all the options, as any Government would do, and make decisions in the best interests of the State, the sportspeople of the State, the sports community of the State and the local community, and that is what I will do.
