ROYALTIES FOR REGIONS — REGIONAL ROAD FUNDING
I note the minister’s statement in 2007 that “the state missed the opportunity to use some of the surplus to modernise the road network” and the fact that his government has cut the roads budget by $260 million. (1) Given that in 2010, 60 per cent of the 193 people killed on Western Australian roads were killed on country roads, why is the minister not prepared to fund road treatments and upgrades on country roads under royalties for regions? (2) Is the minister reconsidering using royalties for regions to fund the RAC’s regional roads rescue program? Mr B.J. GRYLLS

I thank the member for Girrawheen for the question. (1)–(2) I am glad that the member has finally become a convert to royalties for regions. I look forward to her outlining her vision for how she will spend it when she eventually gets back into government in 10 or 15 years. Obviously, road safety is a major challenge for all governments. The Minister for Police and other ministers have put forward a comprehensive strategy called Towards Zero. It is a very important policy platform that the government looks at during the budgetary process, as it does with all elements of funding. In about a month, the Treasurer will outline to the house where the funding priorities of the state lie. About that time would be a good time for the member for Girrawheen to ask her question.
