MAGELLAN METALS — SAFETY STANDARDS BREACH
I refer to the dangerous issues that have come to light as a result of Magellan Metals Pty Ltd’s breaching safety standards. (1) Do the current ministerial conditions require the auditor to immediately report to the CEO of the Department of Environment and Conservation any findings of material containing lead carbonate outside the sealed bags after a shipping container is removed from the mine site? (2) Was the CEO made aware of the breaches that led to the 31 December stop order; and, if so, when was he made aware? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Environment has provided the following response — (1) Since the creation of the Office of the Environmental Protection Authority, reporting is to the CEO of the OEPA. The accredited auditor is required to immediately report to the CEO of the OEPA any findings of material containing lead carbonate outside the sealed bags after a shipping container is removed from the mine site. The accredited auditor is also required to report any exceedence of baseline lead levels for air quality monitoring in shipping containers. (2) The acting CEO of the OEPA was advised of unvalidated results of air quality monitoring in shipping containers indicating possible exceedences of the baseline lead levels on 15 December 2010.
