BUSHFIRE
SEASON
1120. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH to
the Attorney General representing the Minister for Emergency Services:
I have two questions today. This is
question C1123.
Can the Minister for Emergency Services advise what local
government areas have been identified as ''high risk'' for this
year's bushfire season?

AnswerView source ↗

On behalf of the Minister for Emergency Services, I thank the
honourable member for some notice of this question.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that it
is continually assessing the bushfire risk of areas throughout the state using
the bushfire threat analysis model. This model is also utilised by local
governments. This information is used to guide operational affairs and is not
released to the media or otherwise published to avoid creating panic or apathy
in suburban and regional Western Australia. DFES uses this information to draft
bushfire preparedness, awareness and education with the community and
stakeholders. In addition, DFES regularly contributes information for the
preparation of the seasonal outlook, which is undertaken once a year for each
of the northern and southern portions of Australia. The seasonal outlook is
publicly available on the website of the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre
at http://www.bushfirecrc.com. That is a website. It is just a source of
information. It is not part of the answer to the question.
The PRESIDENT : I hope you will pass that to Hansard.
Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich : Speed it up or I will never get a chance
to ask the second question!
Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN : And I am sure we will be the poorer for
it!
The answer continues —
DFES, through the Office of Bushfire
Risk Management, is developing a statewide bushfire-prone area map. On 1 May
2015, the Commissioner for Fire and Emergency Services plans to designate areas
identified as bushfire-prone on a statewide map. The map will guide planning
decisions regarding the application of development and construction standards
in bushfire-prone areas.
