(1) The Government's election commitment will result in increased funding to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of $29.9 million over five years. This is in addition to the increase of $38.6 million over five years allocated to the Health budget in July 2008.
The combined increase of $68.5 million over five years brings the total funding provided to the RFDS through the Department of Health to $171.91 million over the five years from 2008/09 to 2012/13.
(2) The additional $29.9 million over five years has been approved by Cabinet and will be reflected in Mid Year Review budget adjustments.
(3) The additional funding of $29.9 million over five years will enable the RFDS to replace two of its ageing aircraft and purchase one additional aircraft to further expand its fleet. It will also provide for the additional crew and running costs associated with the new aircraft and fund increased operational costs associated with staff salaries and training.
The total increase of $68.5 million over five years will result in the replacement of five existing aircraft and the purchase of three additional aircraft and associated crew and running costs. The additional aircraft will be based at Kalgoorlie from 2008/09, Port Hedland from 2009/10 and Jandakot from 2010/11.
(4) Specific funding has been allocated to provide the additional crew and support staff associated with each of the new aircraft, including doctors, nurses, pilots and ground maintenance staff. Of the combined increased of $68.5 million over 5 years, $14.042 million has been allocated for increased staffing.
(a) Of the $38.6 million increase over five years approved in July 2008, $8.387 million over five years from 2008/09 has been allocated for additional staff associated with the new aircraft based at Kalgoorlie and Port Hedland.
Of the additional $29.9 million approved by the Government through its election commitment, $5.67 million has been allocated for additional staffing over the three years from 2010/11 when the Jandakot aircraft will be purchased.
