The Department of Mines and Petroleum advises:
(a) I assume the Member is referring to a survey commissioned by the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in June 2013 on community perceptions and attitudes on the emerging shale and tight gas industry in Western Australia.
(b) Research Solutions undertook the survey in August 2013 and finalised its report to DMP in September 2013.
(c) The cost of the survey was $51,119.09 and the cost was met by DMP.
(d) The survey was undertaken to assess:
· community awareness and understanding;
· degree to which the public feel informed about the issue and how they would prefer to be better informed; and
· community views, issues and concerns.
This baseline data will assist government and DMP in particular in further developing and implementing its community engagement strategy.
(e) Research Solutions used a telephone questionnaire to survey a Western Australia-wide sample consisting of 402 respondents. This was followed by a telephone survey of communities in potential exploration areas consisting of 200 respondents in each area (Perth North Basin, South Carnarvon Basin and Canning Basin).
(f) I refer the Member to the survey report.
(g) The survey results have been provided to the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, DMP staff, the Shale and Tight Gas Inter-agency Working Group and industry represenatives.
