TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES
Has the Carpenter government successfully tapped into the full potential of tourism activities in this state, or is it possible that other opportunities have been overlooked? Mr E.S. RIPPER

The government’s tourism ministers have been very successful in developing the tourism industry in Western Australia and in promoting the state. Yesterday, some new suggestions for the tourism industry were put in the public debate by the member for Carine. Before I go into that, I congratulate the member for Carine for her good judgment and grace in the comments she made about the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. She said, “I don’t have the skills of, say, someone like Alannah MacTiernan, and I respect her and admire her.” That is a great comment from the member for Carine. It was very well said. I also admire and respect the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. Yesterday the member for Carine gave us an insight into the thinking of the Liberal Party opposition on the issue of tourism. She showed what I described yesterday as its schizophrenia on spending issues. According to my transcript of the interview, she said, “I believe in our free enterprise system; I believe in minimal government.” That is terrific, but in another part of the interview she said, “It’s a real shame that this government isn’t spending more money on supporting the convention centre.” She went on to say, “I’m calling on Sheila McHale to actually deliver and put more money into promoting the state.” That is a further example of what I was talking about during question time yesterday. The Deputy Leader of the Opposition runs with great integrity a campaign to reduce expense growth - I do not use those words seriously - while his shadow minister colleagues call for more expenditure on the health system, the Department for Community Development, the Busselton jetty and the Swan River. Now, more expenditure on tourism has been called for by the shadow Minister for Tourism, the member for Carine. The opposition really has to get its act together on this matter. Let me address the suggestion of the shadow Minister for Tourism. She actually suggested - Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! I call the member for Carine to order for the third time today. I also call the member for Dawesville to order. Mr E.S. RIPPER : When the shadow Minister for Tourism was asked about major tourism attractions in the state, she suggested that mines were bringing people to the state. Bob Maumill was quite surprised. He said, “Come to our state and see a big hole with trucks in it and blokes whose clothes need a wash? Turn it up.” Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr E.S. RIPPER : That gives us an insight into the thinking of the Liberal Party. Now we know why it supports uranium mining: it is actually a tourism initiative! It is looking for “glowing” references from international visitors to our tourism industry!
