JULIEKA IVANNA DHU — DEATH IN CUSTODY —
CCTV FOOTAGE RELEASE
790. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for
Police:
I refer to police closed-circuit
television video footage of Ms Dhu and the coroner's advice this week
that, given the footage existed prior to being provided to the Coroner's
Court, police could make a decision regarding the release of its CCTV footage.
(1) Given that
the coronial inquest into the death of Ms Dhu has been held and given the
family's strong desire for the footage to be released, what impediments
are there to WA Police releasing that CCTV footage?
(2) What will the
minister do to assist the relatives and friends of Ms Dhu to ensure the urgent
release of that CCTV footage?

(1)–(2) From
the outset, WA Police has never opposed the release of the footage. The advice
we have been given and the advice I have received is that the coroner is still
engaged in that inquest. The coroner made a decision not to release the
footage. Police would not release the footage contrary to the coroner's
decision.
