GOLDFIELDS, MOUNTED POLICE
Given that the eighth point of the Labor Party’s goldfields election policy titled “Working for the Goldfields” states that one of Labor’s key initiatives for the goldfields is the - establishment of a permanent Mounted Police Unit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder which, initially, will involve two officers and four horses, (a) does the minister intend to honour this promise; (b) if not, why not; and (c) if not, can the minister advise the House whether she thinks the people in my electorate of Kalgoorlie will ever again read a key Labor Party election promise and believe that it will actually be honoured after an election? The SPEAKER: The minister is not required to answer questions that ask for an opinion. Mrs ROBERTS

I remind the member for Kalgoorlie that his party did not offer one extra cent for horse patrols anywhere in the State. This Government is committed to $1.4 million in extra funding for the mounted police unit and the canine section. As a result, horse patrols will be delivered to a number of regional centres, well ahead of any schedule that people might have imagined. That includes - and indeed they have started - in the member’s electorate of Kalgoorlie. It will also include the major towns of Bunbury, Geraldton and Albany. I have already outlined a program under which police horses will be going to all of those towns on a regular basis. The member for Kalgoorlie would do his electorate a lot better service if, rather than carp and complain, he congratulated the Government on an excellent initiative.
