I have a question without notice to one of our absent friends. The PRESIDENT: Order! Ministers, are we expecting any parliamentary secretaries for question time? Hon NORMAN MOORE: I refer to a newspaper report that the State Government is committing $1.8 million to secure the Hopman Cup until 2007. (1) What will the $1.8 million be used for? (2) Does the State still underwrite the event; and, if so, to what limit? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Western Australian Government financially supports the Hopman Cup through EventsCorp, a division of the Western Australian Tourism Commission, with a $1.8 million sponsorship deal over three years. This funding supports the operation and broadcasting of the Hopman Cup and ensures that the event will remain in Western Australia until 2007. The Hopman Cup provides Western Australia with significant national and international media exposure by the ABC and Foxtel. Such exposure not only showcases the State’s capacity to host high-level sporting events, but also highlights Western Australia as a tourism destination. Western Australian tourism imagery is incorporated into each television broadcast with a panoramic view of the Perth skyline in the opening scenes. Furthermore, the event has a web site that carries information about the event, together with other images of Perth and details of tour packages. Each year it is staged the Hopman Cup delivers approximately $2 million in economic benefits to Western Australia. (2) As negotiated under the previous Government, the current State Government has continued to conditionally underwrite the Hopman Cup to the value of $2 million.
