KARRI WAY, FERNDALE
318. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the
Minister for Housing:
I refer to the City of Canning town planning amendment 177
under town planning scheme 40 in relation to the proposed Department of Housing
development of lot 500 Karri Way, Ferndale.
(1) Is the
minister aware that the remnant bushland that forms part of lot 500 Karri Way
is home to unique orchids and other plant species not found elsewhere and that
it forms a wildlife corridor for arboreal birds, including the endangered black
cockatoo?
(2) Will the
minister assure the community of Ferndale that this remnant bushland will be
preserved?
(3) How much
of the remaining development site will be set aside as public open space?
(4) What steps
will be taken to ensure that the remnant bushland and any additional space
reserved for public open space will not be damaged during the development?
(5) Has a
survey been conducted to ascertain the community's feelings about the
proposed development?
(6) If no to (5),why not?
(7) If yes to
(5), how many of those surveyed were in favour of the development and how many
were opposed to it?

I thank the honourable member for notice of the question. The
Department of Housing advises —
(1) The
minister—that is, the Minister for Housing—is aware that the
site contains a pocket of remnant bushland.
(2) Although
the department has prepared an initial concept plan for the site that proposes
to incorporate the bushland within public open space, future preservation of
the bushland is dependent on the City of Canning, in which the public open
space reserve would be vested.
(3) Approximately
18.5 per cent.
(4) Normal
development practices utilised by the department will aim to ensure that the
public open space is not damaged during development.
(5) No formal
surveys have been conducted. However, the department held a public meeting and
the City of Canning sought community feedback through its preliminary
consultation process.
(6) Not
applicable.
