DISABILITY JUSTICE CENTRES
1. 221. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the Minister for Disability
Services:
I refer to the proposed new
disability justice centres.
(1) What will be the security rating
for each of the two proposed centres?
(2) What were the shortlisted sites
considered as a location for a centre?
(3) Will the
minister provide the written criteria against which the sites were assessed;
and, if not, why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) The
disability justice centres will not have a security rating as they will not be
prisons. The Mentally Impaired Accused Review Board will determine who is
suitable to be placed in the centres and will, as part of this decision making,
take into account issues such as the seriousness of the offence and the nature
of the facility.
(2) In 2012–13
the WA Planning Commission shortlisted a further 11 different sites for
consideration. In arriving at the decision on the two chosen sites, all sites
shortlisted were considered.
(3) The
criteria for sites were: land size, with a minimum block size of 7 000 square
metres; a flat block with capacity for landscaping; reasonable access to public
transport; location not in close proximity to schools, kindergartens or
childcare centres; location a reasonable distance from neighbours; location in
reasonable proximity to shops and community amenities; location not in
industrial areas; and, location likely to be acceptable to local council.
