I refer to the recent merger of the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management. (1) How much, if any, will the respective functions of the current Department of Environment and Department of Conservation and Land Management change upon the creation of the new Department of Environment and Conservation? (2) Which programs will be affected by these changes? (3) How will these programs be affected? (4) What cost savings, if any, have been made? On behalf of the Minister for the Environment, I am happy to provide the following response - (1) The new department will undertake all functions currently undertaken by the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management. (2)-(3) Not applicable. (4) No cost savings are anticipated. However, there will be operational efficiencies in some areas such as natural resource management and salinity programs; environment management and impact assessments; regional operations; and environmental and conservation science and research programs. (5) It should be noted that the amalgamation of the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management is not scheduled to take effect until July 2006.
