— REGIONAL STATUS
969. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. To
repair some of the damage the government's migration changes have
caused, will the Premier immediately commit to providing StudyPerth with
additional funding so that it can inform our international markets —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : Will the
Premier immediately commit to providing StudyPerth with additional funding so
that it can inform our international markets that the government's
destructive migration changes have now finally been reversed?

The
Leader of the Opposition might not know, but in the last state budget, we
increased funding for StudyPerth by $4.5
million, from memory. We said to StudyPerth that we wanted it to work with
universities to get matching funding ,
which is what it has done. In effect, we made a massive, fourfold increase in
the state government's commitment to StudyPerth, and it has leveraged
that to double the spend by working with the universities. In other words, by
being collaborative and proactive, we have actually secured an enormous
increase in the budget for StudyPerth. As I said to the Leader of the
Opposition earlier, Rod Jones, who is internationally famous in the
international education sector as one of the greatest success stories in
the world, is now heading up StudyPerth. That is what we successfully achieved.
Over our term in office, we have seen very significant increases in
commencements and enrolments.
Obviously,
there were issues around 457 visas that we had to address when we came to
office. In the time since we came to office, 457 visas have been
abolished. We now work with the commonwealth government to resolve any
outstanding issues in relation to international students. I look forward to the
industry continuing to be successful.
