As a supplementary question, can the minister tell us when this Government will get serious about ensuring that offenders who belong in jail stay in jail? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I suggest that members opposite try not to get down in the gutter on an issue such as this. It is a serious issue, which this Government is taking very seriously. This Government has put in place tougher laws on law and order matters than any previous Government, whether it be the three strikes legislation, laws that deal with the confiscation of assets and with outlaw motorcycle gangs, or the $20 million we have spent on the implementation of DNA legislation rather than the paltry $1 million the previous Government was going to spend. Without doubt we have been tougher on law and order matters than any other Government. Unlike members opposite, we are prepared to call people to account. We are prepared to have an independent and appropriate investigation into this matter to ensure that a situation such as this does not occur again. The SPEAKER: I call to order the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and the member for Warren-Blackwood.
