TAXIS —
LONDON-STYLE CABS — MECHANICAL ISSUES
447. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Transport:
I refer to the minister's comments in this house
yesterday that the brakes on the London–style taxicabs need a brake
enhancement program to ensure confidence.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that on 22 May this year his agency met with taxidrivers and
the promoters of the London-style cabs to discuss drivers' concerns
about the brakes and other safety issues?
(2) When will
the brake enhancement program be completed?
(3) What other
concerns and safety issues were raised at that meeting and how will they be
addressed?

(1)–(3)
As I mentioned yesterday, the London–style taxicabs meet Australian
safety standards. A concern about the brakes was raised. The Department of
Transport conducted a test and found them to meet the requirements and
standards of brakes for Australian purposes. We have not received any further
complaints that I am aware of. I cannot specifically talk about the meeting
that the member is referring to. I would have to take that on notice and come
back to the member with any detail from that meeting.
