I ask this question on behalf of Hon Alan Cadby, who has unfortunately been called away on urgent parliamentary business. This question relates to the special team formed to improve the academic performance of government school students in Western Australia. (1) Is this team being formed as a result of the minister’s lack of confidence in the system’s capacity to meet the academic needs of its students? (2) If yes, how will this team gain the confidence of government schoolteachers if they know that they do not have the confidence of the Minister for Education and Training? (3) If no to question (1), why was the team formed and what outcomes will be used to judge its success? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I provide the response to this question on behalf of the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training. (1) No; the team has been formed to help improve the academic performance of government school students. (2) Not applicable. (3) The aim of the project is to ensure that government schools enhance the opportunities of year 12 students wishing to pursue a tertiary education. The team will be responsible for developing both short and long-term plans to improve year 12 academic performance and to give students a greater chance of getting into university. The success of the team will be judged on the basis of advice from schools on the quality of support provided to teachers of year 11 and 12 students.
