''PERTH AND [email protected] MILLION''
219. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the
Minister for Planning:
I refer to the March 2018 document of the Department of
Planning, Lands and Heritage and the Western Australian Planning Commission
entitled ''Perth and [email protected] million''.
(1) What are
the fundamental assumptions behind the forecast for population growth of 1.5 million
people within the Perth and Peel regions by 2050?
(2) Is ''Perth
and [email protected] million'' the clear expression of a population target for
the government; and, if not, what is it?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) Population
growth for the Perth and Peel regions, as set out in ''Perth and
[email protected]'', is based on the ''Western Australia Tomorrow''
long-term population projections and the key principles from the 2010
publication of ''Directions 2031 and beyond: metropolitan planning
beyond the horizon''. It assumes that future population growth will
reflect historical trends.
(2) No. ''Perth
and [email protected] million'' is a strategic planning document, which was
prepared in collaboration with state agencies and local governments. It
identifies land available for urban, commercial and industrial development to
guide the future growth of Perth and Peel as a city that can accommodate a population
of 3.5 million by 2050.
